Orthodontic Injury

If you have braces, retainers, or other orthodontic devices, you are certainly invested in your oral health! Unfortunately, orthodontic injuries to the soft oral tissues due to an accident, fall, or collision are a possible side effect of having braces and wires in your mouth. If that happens, you can count on the Placerville Dental Group to ease your worries and your pain!

Orthodontic injuries typically cause one or more of the following:

  • Trauma to your face, teeth, or mouth
  • Lacerations or punctures caused by brackets or broken wires
  • Swelling or redness in and around your mouth
  • Intense pain
  • Damaged brackets and wires
  • Loosened or knocked-out teeth
  • Broken retainer or mouthguard.

First Aid for Orthodontic Injuries

No matter your injury, here are some guidelines to follow:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water.
  • For pain and swelling apply a cold washcloth to the injured area.
  • Only choose soft foods for eating until you receive treatment.
  • Use OTC pain medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Do not use aspirin, as it can increase the bleeding.

Speak to a dentist at the Placerville Dental Group as soon as possible to plan your next steps for urgent treatment.

Broke a piece off a rear tooth over the weekend. Placerville Dental group fit me in Thursday, first thing, since I didnt have any pain. I thought they would pull it, but the Dr. suggested a crown. In 2.5 hours I have a temporary and in 2 weeks I get the permanent crown. BTW: this is a new dentist for me as I had not selected a new dentist since moving to Placerville. I now have one. thanks PDG.
