Bleeding Extraction Site

It is normal to experience some bleeding at the site of a tooth extraction. If the empty tooth socket is bleeding excessively, you feel significant pain, or the bleeding does not stop after 24 hours, then it is important to seek dental help quickly. The Placerville Dental Group is here for you during nights and weekends if you experience a bleeding emergency.

Care for Bleeding Extraction Sites

Here are some steps to care for a tooth socket that is bleeding.

  • Avoid brushing or flossing the bleeding area.
  • Wet a piece of gauze with cool water and hold it to the tooth socket for a minimum of 45 minutes.
  • If that does not work, or if you do not have any gauze, steep a black or green tea bag in boiling water for 2-3 minutes and then remove it and let it cool. Once cooled, apply it to the extraction site and gently bite down for up to 30 minutes. The tannic acid in the tea helps to contract the blood vessels in the tooth socket.
  • Contact the Placerville Dental Group at (530) 444-5322 if additional assistance is still needed.
